The Birmingham, AL R&D Lab is seeking a motivated and responsible candidate for a Research Associate II position. The candidate must have relevant lab experience, demonstrate strong communication skills, and be a team player. Reporting to the Senior Scientist, the Research Associate II will work be responsible for executing routine testing (including but not limited to cellular assays, PCR, western blots, and ELISA) as well as troubleshooting and developing new experimental approaches for various projects. This position is on-site and reports to the Senior Manager of R&D.
Key Responsibilities
- Performs a wide range of assigned research experiments with efficiency, accuracy and attention to detail.
- Design and execute experiments to investigate hypotheses, makes observations, and interprets findings with minimal supervision (e.g., troubleshoots routine experiments, and develops some non-routine procedures).
- Exercises technical judgment in execution of specialized procedures and interpretation of complex results.
- Makes observations, documents experimental data, and records all data and results in specified forms (paper and electronic) with accuracy and responsibility.
- Prepare technical reports and present data/findings within R&D and cross functional teams.
- Initiates non-routine investigations as needed and recommend solutions.
- Performs calculations, statistics, and complex analysis on experimental results.
- Assist in ordering and receiving laboratory supplies.
- Stores, aliquots and keeps inventory of important laboratory reagents.
- Maintains laboratory equipment by keeping up with routine maintenance and inspection.
- Maintains a clean and sanitary work area in accordance with standard laboratory practice and procedures.
- Ensure that all safety guidelines are followed strictly at all times and maintain a clean and orderly environment.
Requirements
Preferred Education and Experience
- 2-5 years of laboratory experience in related environment.
- Bachelor’s Degree in biology, chemistry, or relevant field required.
- Master’s Degree preferred.
- Knowledge of lab procedures and techniques; of lab equipment and terminology; and of laboratory hazards and safety practices.
- Experience with Cell Culture, ELISA assays, PCR, and other relevant laboratory procedures.
- Experience in operating electrical and nonelectrical laboratory equipment and potentially dangerous substances (flammable liquids, biohazards, etc.)
- Working knowledge of MS Office (especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
- Ability to work in an organized and autonomous fashion.
Physical Demands
- Standing for extended periods of time.
- Bending over for extended periods of time.
- Sometimes having repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
- Occasional lifting of objects up to 40 lbs.
Environmental Conditions
- Frequently in a lab setting.
- Frequently around biohazardous materials.
- Frequently using scientific equipment like microscopes, centrifuges, hoods, etc.
- Occasionally in cold temperatures.
- Occasionally around loud noises.
